3 Things Holding Back Your Small Business (Part 3)

Upscale Lesson #3: Make sure people actually WANT what you're selling.

This is the foundation of every successful business. Too many entrepreneurs get caught up in the excitement of their own vision and forget to ask the most important question: does anyone actually care? Your passion for your product or service is important, but it's not enough. You need to know that real people—people with real money—are willing to exchange that money for what you're offering. The difference between a thriving business and a struggling one often comes down to this single factor. You can have perfect branding, amazing customer service, and flawless execution, but if you're selling something nobody wants, you're fighting an uphill battle. Before you go all-in, take the time to validate that there's genuine market demand for what you're creating. This isn't about being pessimistic; it's about being smart with your resources and your time.

Upscale Don't #1: Don't assume people will buy

One of the biggest mistakes small business owners make is creating products or services based on what they think customers need, rather than what customers actually want. You might have the best idea in the world, but if your target audience isn't interested, it won't sell. Before you invest time and money into developing something new, validate your concept. Talk to potential customers. Ask questions. Run surveys. Test your idea with a small group first. The goal is to gather real data that proves there's genuine demand—not just hope that people will show up when you launch.

Upscale Don't #2: Don't ignore feedback

Your customers are your best source of information. When they leave reviews, send messages, or share complaints, they're giving you free market research. Ignoring feedback is like throwing away gold. Pay attention to what people are saying—both the praise and the criticism. If multiple customers mention the same issue, that's a signal you need to address. Feedback helps you refine your offerings, improve your customer experience, and stay competitive. When you listen and actually make changes based on what you hear, customers feel valued and are more likely to stick around and recommend you to others.

Upscale Don't #3: Don't build in silence

Building your business behind closed doors without input from your audience is a recipe for disappointment. The most successful small businesses involve their community in the journey. Share what you're working on. Ask for opinions. Let people weigh in on new ideas before you fully commit. This creates a sense of ownership among your customers and ensures you're building something people actually want to buy. Plus, when your audience feels heard and included, they become your biggest advocates.
